The 2022 Ontario general election was held on June 2, 2022 to elect the 124 members of the 43rd Parliament of Ontario. The Progressive Conservative (PC) Party of Ontario, led by Doug Ford, won a majority government with 83 of the 124 seats in the legislature. The incumbent party, they increased their seat share from 76 in the 2018 election. They campaigned on a slogan to “get it done,” pledging to build highways and transit infrastructure and open up the “Ring of Fire,” a mineral-rich area in northern Ontario. Instead of an election platform, the Ontario PC Party presented its promises on its website in the form of press releases throughout the campaign.

“The audit found that the steps the Ministry has taken to date will not significantly improve waste diversion from businesses and institutions, and Ontario’s overall diversion rate will suffer.”

Justification

In 2018, the Ontario government unveiled the Made-In-Ontario Environment Plan, which includes a provision to reduce litter in the province’s communities. Various initiatives such as the Provincial Day of Action on Litter and the Surplus Food Redistribution Program have been implemented and supported. However, since none of these programs specifically commit resources to reduce garbage in communities across the province, this promise remains in progress.

“We made the following progress on the transition to the producer responsibility model […] Provided over a $5 million investment through the Surplus Food Redistribution Infrastructure program to help food rescue organizations divert high quality food to those who need it and out of landfill; Enacted legislation to establish the second Tuesday of May each year as Ontario’s Provincial Day of Action on Litter.”

“The Ontario government unveiled its plan to combat climate change Thursday, including a fund that commits public money to entice companies to reduce emissions. The regime, called the Preserving and Protecting our Environment for Future Generations: A Made-In-Ontario Environment Plan, aims to keep the province working toward meeting the emissions-reduction goals in the Paris Accord. […] Other features of the plan include […] reducing litter in the province’s communities.”
