Promise History
1.06.01 - “Create a 75% refundable tax credit for child care costs for children aged 0 - 15 and respect parents by leaving to them the choice of what kind of child care is best for their kids”
28-Mar-2022
In March 2022, the Ontario government announced a deal with the Federal government for $10-a-day child care, to be gradually introduced through to 2025. The deal was stated to “secure some flexibility to protect parental choice”. The previously annouced child care tax credits remain unaffected by this decision. However, as the tax credits still do not cover 75% of child care costs for most families, the promise is considered partially kept.
“The provincial government was also able to secure more flexibility in how the money will be spent, and able to secure a review with a deal in year three with more possible funding being implemented at that point. Minister of Education Stephen Lecce said while other provinces’ funding [for $10/day child care] will focus on not for profit childcare, Ontario was ‘able to secure some flexibility to protect parental choice, including for those small business owners, often women-owned enterprises.’ Lecce added they will be maintaining the Ontario child care tax credit program as well.”

“The CARE tax credit is based on a sliding scale for families earning up to $150,000 in household income each year. Families earning $20,000 or less per year will qualify for 75 per cent of eligible expenses per child.”
