The 2022 Ontario general election was held on June 2, 2022 to elect the 124 members of the 43rd Parliament of Ontario. The Progressive Conservative (PC) Party of Ontario, led by Doug Ford, won a majority government with 83 of the 124 seats in the legislature. The incumbent party, they increased their seat share from 76 in the 2018 election. They campaigned on a slogan to “get it done,” pledging to build highways and transit infrastructure and open up the “Ring of Fire,” a mineral-rich area in northern Ontario. Instead of an election platform, the Ontario PC Party presented its promises on its website in the form of press releases throughout the campaign.

Justification

Building the Yonge extension was a promise during the Ford government’s first mandate (see more here). In December 2023, the Ontario government issued a Request for Proposals for the Advance Tunnel Contract. As steps have been taken to build infrastructure to enable the Yonge-North extension, this promise is considered in progress.

“The Ontario government is taking another step forward to get shovels in the ground on the Yonge North Subway Extension by issuing a Request for Proposals (RFP) for the contract to design and build the subway’s tunnels. […] The issuance of the RFP comes as the project reaches another important milestone. Early upgrade work at Finch Station, where the Yonge North Subway Extension will connect with existing Line 1 service, is now substantially complete. The upgrades set the stage for major construction of the subway extension.”
