The 2022 Ontario general election was held on June 2, 2022 to elect the 124 members of the 43rd Parliament of Ontario. The Progressive Conservative (PC) Party of Ontario, led by Doug Ford, won a majority government with 83 of the 124 seats in the legislature. The incumbent party, they increased their seat share from 76 in the 2018 election. They campaigned on a slogan to “get it done,” pledging to build highways and transit infrastructure and open up the “Ring of Fire,” a mineral-rich area in northern Ontario. Instead of an election platform, the Ontario PC Party presented its promises on its website in the form of press releases throughout the campaign.

Justification

In November 2023, the government announced that they had completed the first phase of work to widen Highway 17. This involved building a new interchange. The next phase of work includes building three more interchanges, and ultimately widening the roads. This promise is in progress.

“The Ontario government has completed the first phase of work to widen Highway 17 from two to four lanes between the Town of Renfrew and Arnprior, with the opening of a new interchange at Calabogie Road in Renfrew County. […] Work completed in Phase 1 of the project included building a new interchange to carry Calabogie Road traffic over Highway 417, a new carpool lot north of the highway, access roads and new ramp connections. The next phase includes building three more interchanges and widening 22.5 kilometres of Highway 17 from Scheel Drive to three kilometres west of Bruce Street in Renfrew County.”

Justification

Although the Ford government committed to widening of Highway 17 in their 2022 Budget, work remains planned and not yet underway according to the Ontario Highways Program webpage. This promise remains not yet rated until such time that the project gets underway.
