The Canadian federal election of 2021 (officially the 44th Canadian general election) took place on September 20, 2021, and elected members of the House of Commons to Canada’s 44th Parliament. The Liberal Party, led by outgoing Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, won 160 seats, forming a second consecutive minority government.

The Trudeau government had originally made 569 promises in its 2021 campaign platform and press releases. This number was reduced to 352 by an extensive, multi-coder process of sorting promises according to their degree of precision and importance to society. Unclear and less important promises were removed from the analysis.

For an analysis of the achievements of Justin Trudeau’s first government (2015-2019), see Birch and Pétry (2019), Assessing Justin Trudeau’s Liberal Government. 353 promises and a mandate for change, published by Les Presses de l’Université Laval.

3.03.47 - “A re-elected Liberal government will […] [m]ove forward with a made-in-Canada model of open banking that will launch no later than the beginning of 2023. This system will ensure that you, not your bank, control your data.”

“Open banking is not yet available in Canada. This means that there is currently no secure system in Canada to safely share financial data from your bank account with fintechs other than your bank.”

“The working groups have made good progress to date, showing clear consensus on some core elements of accreditation and common rules. The open banking lead and the secretariat will now transition their focus to a period of internal policy work. Working group meetings will resume in 2023.””

« Le gouvernement fédéral a annoncé mardi la nomination d’Abraham Tachjian au poste de responsable du système bancaire ouvert. »

« Justement, le gouvernement canadien tarde à tenir sa promesse d’adapter ses lois pour favoriser l’émergence d’un secteur bancaire plus ouvert. Sur le plan législatif, un comité a suggéré au gouvernement fédéral, en avril 2021, une feuille de route pour permettre l’émergence au pays d’un système bancaire ouvert. »
